december 4th is poetry night

On Saturday December 4th we are sponsoring a poetry night at Rock Salt.  This is the first event of this kind we have hosted and we are very excited.  It is such a great honor to be able to support artistic expression on our very creative island.  The festivities will start after dinner around 8pm. So come on down for dinner (remember Saturdays are Mexican night) and then enjoy the show.  Or  just come for the show – the kitchen and cafe will be open late for appetizers, desserts and snacks.

The performing poets will be Ahava Shira, Rowan Percy and Chris Smart.  Ahava Shira is a poet and author of Womb: Weaving of My Being (Butterfly Press, 1998) and a new poetry CD called Love is Like This.  Her poetry is published in anthologies and journals.  She has been performing since 1995 in classrooms, bookstores, cafes and conference centers across North America and Europe.  She says, “I write not to be perfect, nor to wow them, to show what a brilliant poet I am, but to feel alive, to sing out, to connect.”

Rowan Percy is a poet, writer and queer activist.  She says, “I am thrilled to be reading at Rock Salt. Poetry is the soul of speech. Let this be a celebration of expression.”

Christine Smart’s book of poems Decked and Dancing won the People’s Poet Award in 2007. Her poems perform acts of clear-eyed unsentimental recollection and fierce longing, and move with an earthy music that is all their own. The reader is left with a sense of the sharp, bittersweet tang of the authentic.

This event is going to be a very apt addition to island creativity on display for ‘craft fair weekend’ on Salt Spring Island.
